Winter Recreation

New Brunswickers know very well what snow looks and feels like. We receive an average of 400cm (157") of annual snowfall. It's a paradise for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

You can reach Palfrey Lake Lodge over one of the many snowmobile trails. There are over 6000km (3500 miles) of groomed trails. New Brunswick has one of the longest snowmobile seasons outside of the Arctic!

In mid-February, Palfrey Lake Lodge celebrates the 'Ice-In Day'. It's a special occasion when a large number of volunteers gather at the lodge. Large ice blocks are cut out of the lake, and then brought to the ice house, where the blocks are neatly stacked and covered in sawdust. This way the Lodge secures a supply of ice for the whole year until the next winter arrives. For a lot of people, this is unbelievable... all summer long the ice stays solid underneath the sawdust, even as temperatures outside reach 30°C (86°F). Come and check it out!
